Stepping Up: My Experience as LA Walk4Hearing Team Captain
An author at the Walk4Hearing event holds a sign promoting awareness of hearing loss, educating the public on the challenges faced by those with impairments and encouraging community conversation.
This year, I had the privilege of serving as the Walk Team Captain for the LAStars at the HLAA’s Walk4Hearing event in Long Beach—and what an unforgettable experience it turned out to be! Our vibrant LA chapter showed up with enthusiasm, determination, and so much heart, and as I reflect on the day, I can’t help but feel deeply grateful to be part of this inspiring community.
A Day of Purpose and Connection
Fellow walkers participate in the Walk4Hearing event, accompanied by family, friends, and pets, as they stroll along the ocean under clear blue skies.
From the moment I arrived at Shoreline Park, the energy was contagious. Teams mingled, organizers buzzed with excitement, and supporters—family and friends—gathered to cheer everyone on. I felt the unique sense of unity that this event brings: every step we took wasn’t just for ourselves, but for the 50 million Americans living with hearing loss, and for all who need understanding, advocacy, and support.
A new member of HLAA's LA chapter strides alongside with the author during the 5K event. They share an engaging conversation as they navigate the course, with colorful banners Both are enthusiastic about raising awareness and supporting the cause, embodying the spirit of community and connection.
As captain, my job was more than just rallying our team. I wanted every member—new and longtime—to feel welcomed and valued. One of my highlights was welcoming Erika, a new advocate and participant, to the LA Stars. We walked and talked the whole way, and I took joy in introducing her to the rest of the HLAA community. Moments like that remind me what Walk4Hearing is all about: building connections, growing stronger together, and making sure no one walks alone.
Fundraising Triumphs and Team Spirit

This year, our team truly outdid itself—we were named Top Team Fundraiser, and two of our members were recognized as the top individual fundraisers! Seeing our group’s dedication pay off in tangible support for HLAA’s mission was incredibly fulfilling. Every dollar raised is not just a number, but an opportunity for education, advocacy initiatives, and support for people navigating hearing loss.
Community, Advocacy, and Celebration

Throughout the day, I was moved by the spirit of togetherness. From team photos and warm-up exercises to celebratory cheers at the finish line, there was a sense of belonging that made every challenge worthwhile. I was especially glad that my family participated as well. Our walk was more than a fundraiser—it was a true celebration of perseverance, advocacy, and hope for a more inclusive world.

Serving as Walk Team Captain was a beautiful reminder that with teamwork and commitment, we can achieve so much more than we ever could alone. Whether you walked, donated, volunteered, or cheered from afar, thank you for supporting this movement. Here’s to many more miles walked—and voices heard—in the journey ahead!
Author happily completes the HLAA Walk4Hearing 5K walk, celebrating with a sense of triumphant joy. "I did it!" resonates in the air as the accomplishment sinks in, marking a significant personal achievement.
